What's a "read"? How is it calculated?

A read on Vocal measures real engagement, not just clicks. Here's exactly how the algorithm works.

Written by Vocal Team

A read on Vocal is not the same as a pageview. It's a measure of genuine engagement - meaning someone actually spent time with your story, not just landed on the page and left.

How the algorithm works

Vocal's read algorithm weighs three things together:

Time on page How long someone stayed on your story. A quick bounce doesn't count.

Scroll depth How far down the page they scrolled. Getting past the title and featured image and actually reading the content is what registers.

Interaction Clicking a link, playing an embedded video, or engaging with other content in the story signals real interest.

No single factor determines a read - it's the combination. A reader who scrolls slowly through a long story without clicking anything can still register as a read if the time and depth are there. A reader who jumps in and immediately clicks out won't.

What doesn't count

  • Immediate bounces (landing on the page and leaving in seconds)

  • Simple page refreshes

  • Bot traffic or artificial page loads

  • Visits that don't get past the header

Why your click count will always be higher

If you track links with a tool like Linktree, Buffer, or Instagram Insights, those numbers measure every click - including accidental taps, quick peeks, and tabs closed before the page even finishes loading. Your Vocal read count strips all of that out.

This is actually a more useful number. Reads tell you how many people genuinely engaged with what you wrote, which is far more valuable for understanding what to create next.

Who earns from reads

Read earnings are exclusive to Vocal+ members. Free accounts can see their read stats but don't earn from them.

Stats can take 24-48 hours to fully update after publishing, so if your numbers look lower than expected right after going live, check back the next day.
